Caulking Recommendations for Hewn Log and Dovetail Sidings

CAULKING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR HEWN LOG AND DOVETAIL SIDINGS

More contractors and homeowners are recognizing the advantages that Hewn Log and Dovetail sidings offer.  These sidings offer a greater number of choices, less movement and maintenance and reduced construction costs over solid full log construction.  When comparing the Hewn Log and Dovetail sidings to typical bevel sidings however, you will see more movement due mainly to their shear mass.

Following these recommendations during the installation and scheduled maintenance will maintain the integrity and beauty of your log siding for many years to come.

  • Use a high quality caulk that stretches and allows natural wood movement. We recommend using either OSI Quad Pro Series or Log Builder caulk by Sashco available at Kwaterski Bros. Wood Products, Inc.
  • During installation of Saddlenotch, Butt n’ Pass, or Dovetail log corners, lay a bead of caulk in front of the corner spline prior to fitting the next course above.
  • After installation, caulk the cross lap joints and vertical machined joints of the Saddlenotch, Butt n’ Pass and Dovetail log corners.
  • Caulk where the ends of the siding meets the window/door/frieze trim.
  • Caulk upward facing splits on log corners and siding that develop over time.
